The iFortner Forum has grown massive!!!! It started last year on June and already an insane 73,000 members! I want to thank and congratulate iFortner on this historical achievement! It is a higher rate of registered members comparing it to the well-known, iPod Touch Fans.

I realised about this blog, well website as well. The website has nearly reached around 40,000 views and is receiving an average of 60 views a day! If I go into the administrative panel though, people ask for many requests such as xPwn tutorials, psx controller skins, etc. I will try to cover up all your searches. And people, please leave comments…………………… I cannot answer every one of your messages or requests, but if you send it to my email, I will definately reply within 48 hours.

Q: Can I jailbreak my iPod Touch 2G with Jailbird?
A: If the ability is there to do it, it will be built into Jailbird, but as of right now…this second…no you can not

A: I am hoping to have the beta ready for beta testers by the end of the month (January 31), and release a stable version to the public sometime in February, however no promises are being made at this time and NO dates are set in stone.

The iPhone Dev team’s redsn0w.com site (with just a picture, see above) has been up a few days. Rumors had floated around about what it was, but no word from the dev team themselves, other than a few clever remarks about skiing accidents (thanks, pumpkin).

A new post on the dev team blog popped up today, suggesting strongly that the image is referring to the iPod Touch 2G.

Further suggesting by MuscleNerd in his Twitter account says:

But the question is, who will get there first? The Chronic Dev Team or the iPhone Dev Team?

* This is a beta so use at your own risk*

1. You must be on firmware 2.2 with modem firmware 2.28.00. So under Settings>General>About and scroll down and ensure you are running modem firmware 2.28.00. If you are NOT you must upgrade or restore to firmware 2.2.

2. Jailbreak your iPhone using QuickPwn

3. Install your new sim.

4. Now in Cydia or Installer, add the iPhone-Dev team source.

• Plase note that its a zero 0 not an o in yellowsn0w.

5. Install ‘yellowsn0w’ from Cydia or Installer.

6. Reboot your iPhone

7. Wait around 1 minute and then eject your sim card and then re-insert it.

8.  Now go into ‘Settings’ and turn ‘Airplane Mode’ ON

9. After 5 seconds turn it back OFF

10. Now just wait whit its ‘Searching…’ it should find your carrier in about 5-15 seconds.

Notes:

1. Soon you’ll see yellowsn0w 0.9.1 in the repos. It uses a much longer delay to let your SIM card initialize. If you have problems with 0.9.0, try this one and wait a full minute after you see homescreen, then reinsert sim card. We need both success and failure reports to tune this across the world, so please be patient (but please also report result!)

2. If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line -q right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that’s and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it)

3. No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.

4. The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.

MuscleNerd will use Qik to broadcast a live video and audio stream (from an iPhone 2G) of an iPhone 3G being soft-unlocked with yellowsn0w.   He’s in Florida for the holidays so there won’t actually be any snow in the live demo (although strangely enough if he were back home in Los Angeles he’d be very close to snow this week!).

Qik creates a chatroom for its videos but it may not be feasible to field questions live from the chatroom.  So if you have a question that hasn’t already been answered in our previous blog posts, please tweet them in advance to Musclenerd.

Step 1

Grab all of the files that you want to convert off of the iPod and put them on your desktop or where ever is convenient for you.
If you try to view stock graphic files in the firmware, you’ll see they refuse to display.

Step 2.

Next you will need to download this nifty little script to take care of the work.
It is called FixPng and you will need to download it here

Once you have done that. Go ahead and open that folder. This is what you will see.

From there, you will want to double click the libjpeg-libpng (universal).dmg file.

Then double click this package and follow the directions and install.

Step 3.

Copy the FixPngDroplet into any other folder on your system.

*NOTE* It won’t work in the downloaded program folder. I put mine in Applications.

Step 4.

Now drag whatever icon you want to convert, and drop it onto the FixPngDroplet program icon. You can drag multiple icons into the program at once if you like.

You will get a pop up window as soon as the file is converted. It will be converted and saved in the same location it was dragged from.

Note: sometimes you might have to put the graphic you want to convert into the same folder as the droplet and then drag them to the droplet to get this to work. I myself have had to do this.

WARNING- The APP will corrupt any PNG that has already been fixed!
In other words. . . Don’t drag the same file on there twice. Once is enough

Their team is currently working on reversing the bootrom, in order to create an exploit in the bootloader. More specifically, the way it parses (the way it analyzes and then acts on) files that are sent to it. This is because the bootrom for the 2nd-gen iPod touch processor (s5l7920x) signature checks the first bootloader (the Low Level Bootloader) that runs.

Without an exploit, this signature check denies any unsigned/patched code to be parsed. Chronic Dev is trying to find an exploit in this Low Level Bootloader (LLB) “so that at every boot the exploit will allow a patched one to run even with the bootrom signature checks on it.”

Will from Chronic Dev said that this is a “new battle” for the team because “it would mean we need an exploit to run unsigned code that will allow us to reflash the LLB, as well as an exploit for the bootrom signature check to pass.” That said, it’s more than just a one-step process for the team, so everyone needs to be patient. “There is no solid date for this type of thing,” said Will.

UPDATE: While we’re still not sure on any release date for a 2nd-gen iPod touch jailbreak, it’s not going to be released before the end of 2008. Will from Chronic Dev commented himself saying that even if it was possibly completed before Christmas time, it wouldn’t be right to release the method prematurely. We’ll keep you posted on any further updates.

Those of you lucky enough to still be on 2.0.0 or the 01.45.00 baseband will be able to unlock first. If you are at 2.1 or used PwnageTool to update to 2.2 then you will have the 2.11.07 baseband. This will be the second baseband to receive an unlock. Those on the 02.28.00 baseband will likely have to wait a while before an unlock is released so make sure you use a tutorial on our site to jailbreak and update rather then using iTunes directly.
If this has totally confused you, accept our apologies. An iPhone 3G software unlock should be here before New Years for the first baseband of the device. Other unlocks for later basebands should come shortly after. Keep hanging in there, the Dev-Team will take care of you!

Some Terms You Need to Understand

“Battery life” means the time your iPod will run before it must be recharged (sometimes this is also called “playtime” or “runtime”). “Battery lifespan” means the total amount of time your battery will last before it must be replaced.

iPod Temperate Zone. Your iPod works best from 32° to 95°F. You should store it in environments of -4° to 113° F. That’s 0° to 35° C and -20° to 45° C for the metrically inclined. Keeping your iPod as near room temperature as possible (72° F or 22° C) is ideal.

Update to the Latest Software

Always make sure iPod has the latest software from Apple, as engineers may find new ways to optimize battery performance. For instance, early iPod models without a dock connector benefit from update 1.3 or later. Using iTunes 7.4 or later, you can update your iPod with the latest software. Put your iPod in its dock or plug it into your computer and iTunes will notify you if a new update is available.

Use iPod Regularly

For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month. If you use your iPod infrequently (gasp), you might want to add a reminder to your calendar program.

Extend Your Battery Life

If you want to extend the battery life of your iPod for any given charge cycle, you may conserve power by following these tips.

Hold and Pause

It may seem obvious, but set the Hold switch when you aren’t using your iPod. This will prevent iPod controls from inadvertently waking up iPod and using unnecessary power. Also, if you are not listening to iPod, pause it, or turn it off by pressing the play button for two seconds.

Optimize Your Settings

There are a few features that use your iPod battery more quickly. If you don’t use these features, your iPod will play tunes longer.

§                 Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi consumes power even if you are not using its features to connect to a network. You can turn it off to save power. Go to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi.

§                 Backlight: Setting the backlight to “always on” will significantly reduce your battery life. Only use the backlight when necessary.

§                 Equalizer: Adding EQs to playback uses more of your iPod processor, since they aren’t encoded in the song. Turn EQ off if you don’t use it. If, however, you’ve added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you’ll need to set EQ to “flat” in order to have the effect of “off,” because iPod keeps your iTunes settings intact.

§                 Minimize use of third-party applications: Excessive use of applications on iPod touch, such as games that prevent the screen from dimming or shutting off, can reduce battery life.

§                 Fetch new data less frequently: Applications on iPod touch such as Mail can be set to fetch data wirelessly at specific intervals. The more frequently email or other data is fetched, the quicker your battery may drain. To fetch new data manually, from the Home screen choose Settings > Fetch New Data and tap Manually. To increase the fetch interval, go to Settings > Fetch New Data and tap Hourly. Note that this is a global setting and applies to all applications that do not support push services.

§                 Turn off push mail: If you have a push mail account on iPod touch such as Yahoo!, MobileMe or Microsoft Exchange, turn off push mail when you don’t need it. Go to Settings > Fetch New Data and set Push to Off. Messages sent to your push email accounts will now be received on your iPod touch based on the global Fetch setting rather than as they arrive.

Maximize Your Memory

iPod plays music out of a solid-state memory cache to provide skip-free playback and maximize battery life. iPod spins its hard drive to fill this cache, which uses power. There are a couple of factors which affect how often this happens, and if you minimize these factors, you’ll extend battery life.

§                 Fast Forward: If you fast forward through your playlist, iPod will need to fill its cache more frequently, thus accessing the hard drive more often and using more power. This will decrease overall battery life. By creating great playlists in iTunes that cater to your personal taste, you can decrease your need to fast forward. Using the shuffle feature may also help to minimize your use of the fast forward feature.

§                 Use Compressed Songs: iPod’s cache works most efficiently with songs of average file sizes (less than 9 MB). If your audio files are large or uncompressed (including AIFF or WAV format), you may want to compress them, or use a different compression method, such as AAC or MP3, when importing them into iTunes. Also, consider breaking very long songs or tracks into shorter tracks that have smaller file sizes. If you encode your music at 128 Kbps, your iPod will fill its cache about every 25 minutes.
